Chapter II:
TIPS TO SIMPLIFYING YOUR SPACE
If you want to start living in a minimalist home, here are a few ideas to get you started:
- GET PERSONAL
Take note of how you live. What do you use on a daily basis? How do you interact with and move around your environment? What can you get rid of in your home's interior? Understanding how you live in your home will provide you with insight into the changes you can make to achieve the minimalist look.
- BE INSPIRED
Gather some pictures of minimalistic homes that have influenced you. For a place to start, pay attention to the textures, color scheme, furniture design, and general atmosphere of the house.
- ADDRESS ONE ROOM AT A TIME
Pick one room to start with instead of going through every room because decluttering an entire house is a labor-intensive task. Finish each room as you go as you work your way through the house.
- EDIT YOUR FURNITURE
Because furniture takes up a large portion of your interior space, begin by editing the pieces in each room. Is there anything that is just gathering dust? Can you replace a piece, such as a coffee table or credenza, to add more storage? Does your current furniture complement your neutral color scheme?
- CLEAR YOUR SURFACES
Take down anything you've hung on the wall simply because the hook was there, and carefully curate your artwork. Remove that stack of magazines on the floor, find a home for your pile of bills on the bench, and reduce the clutter of decorations on your mantle or sideboard.
- FIND A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING
Everything fits perfectly in a basic setting. After use, everything is put back where it belongs. It's worth considering if you genuinely need a certain item if you can't find a space for it. Always choose quality over quantity, and make sure you have enough space to store the items you just can't bear to part with.
